In our family there has been a lot of talk about Halloween. My mom is completely against it. I’m also on her side. So what’s been going on is our friends have been talking about what they are gonna dress up as for a Halloween dance and talking about parties and stuff. But I honestly don’t understand. I have no clue why people dress up on October 31 and “celebrate” something. What are they “celebrating”? My mom thinks they are “celebrating” Satan. I’m with her. It just seems wrong. Especially when people dress as witches and goblins and demons. However, I understand that it can be a chance to share God’s word in a good way when people come to your house. But it can also be a chance for Satan to sneak in and get people to dress up as things that are evil or act like things that are evil. And the Bible even backs me up on this in Deuteronomy 18:9-13.
“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God,”
I’m not saying you should stop doing Halloween if you do it but, I’m just warning you to keep an eye out for Satan. He can be especially sneaky around this time of the year because he has a chance to scare, tempt and draw a bunch of people away from God at once. But you should use this time to tell people about Jesus. Make up little bags of candy and put bible verses on slips of paper in the bags, or when trick-or-treaters come to your house say “Jesus loves you! Have a great night!”.
But if you don’t do it, like my family, even still keep an eye out for Satan and if you have friends that do Halloween make sure they know that is isn’t right to dress up as something evil and pray that they would have a safe, fun time. Maybe if you don’t do Halloween you could have a little “fall party” with some friends and those could be a lot of fun even though you aren’t participating in Halloween!
Remember to enjoy your October no matter how you spend it! And even when it isn’t this time of year you should keep a watchful eye out for Satan.
